One of the Assassin’s Creed games in development will reportedly have an Asian setting.

That’s according to Kotaku, which claims the title is an open-world Assassin’s Creed game codenamed ‘Project Red’.

Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb recently reported on claims that an upcoming Assassin’s Creed game could be set in Japan.

While Kotaku was unable to confirm this, its sources claimed that in addition to being heavily requested by fans, a Japanese setting has long been discussed internally at Ubisoft.

Commenting on Kotaku’s report, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said Project Red is part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, which “will be a platform for future AC games”.

Infinity was first outed in July 2021, when Bloomberg claimed it’s a massive online game that will evolve over time as a live service.

While previous Assassin’s Creed games have been set in specific historical periods, the report said Assassin’s Creed Infinity will contain multiple settings and could expand to more over time.

Ubisoft later confirmed that Infinity is “an exciting and ambitious” collaboration between its Montreal (Assassin’s Creed Origins and Valhalla) and Quebec (Assassin’s Creed Odyssey) studios, although it didn’t provide any further details on the project.

Earlier this month, Schreier said Infinity is “going to include a bunch of different games/experiences/biomes/whatever you want to call them”. He claimed to have “heard about the main two and neither of them are Aztec”.

He also claimed that the next Assassin’s Creed game will take place in Baghdad. While not officially announced, it was previously reported that Ubisoft is planning to release a smaller-scale, stealth-focused Assassin’s Creed game this year or in 2023.

Codenamed Rift and starring Assassin’s Creed Valhalla character Basim, the title was originally planned as an expansion for the most recent series entry before being spun into a standalone game last year, Bloomberg reported in February.

On Thursday Ubisoft delayed Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora and “a smaller unannounced premium game” to its next fiscal year beginning in April 2023.

The smaller game could be Rift, with two sources said to be familiar with Ubisoft’s plans telling Kotaku the company is facing challenges with the title’s development.

Ubisoft recently said it plans to “unveil the future of Assassin’s Creed” in September, when it’s set to hold a multi-game showcase.
