Capcom has announced that more than 5 million copies of Resident Evil Village have been shipped, hitting the milestone quicker than the previous three games in the series.

In a statement following the release of its Q2 financial information, Capcom claimed that since its release on May 7, Village has shipped over 5 million units worldwide.

Based on previous Capcom press statements, Village has reached the figure faster than any other Resident Evil game in the past decade.

Capcom had previously stated that the game’s predecessor, Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, had shipped 5.1 million units in April 2018, some 15 months after the game’s January 2017 release (compared to just over 5 months for Village).

The Resident Evil 2 remake took 11 months to hit the same figure, while Capcom’s last given figures for the Resident Evil 3 remake sat at 3.6 million copies in January this year, suggesting it may not have reached 5 million yet.

Village even appears to have reached 5 million quicker than Resident Evil 6, which had better launch sales than Village. It shipped 4.5 million copies at launch, the best in the series to date, but poor reviews meant sales plateaued, and by the the 5-month mark it was still only at 4.9 million.

The last Resident Evil game to hit 5 million sales quicker than Village was Resident Evil 5, which reached the milestone after just four months on sale.

Capcom has said it hopes Village will surpass Resident Evil 7’s sales to become the best-selling individual title in the series.

“Our main ambition for this year, although there’s so much going on at the same time, is to make sure Resident Evil: Village will be the best-performing Resident Evil title, both in terms of quality as well as business,” Capcom’s EMEA marketing director Antoine Molant told in March.

VGC’s Resident Evil Village review calls Capcom’s horror adventure “a deliciously hammy hybrid of past glories, with some real series highs”.
