Survey: majority of men lose sleep due to video games, alcohol – Healio

Approximately 75% of men reported losing sleep after staying up late to play video games, and 62% of men say they have lost sleep due to staying up to drink alcohol, survey results presented at SLEEP 2022 showed.

The survey polled 2,010 American men from Feb. 17 to 24, and were announced as a part of June’s Men’s Health Month.

“It’s important to wind down at the end of a long day, but ideally the chosen forms of relaxation should not come at the expense of sufficient, healthy sleep,” Imran Shaikh, MD, a member of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine’s Public Awareness Advisory Committee, said in the release.

AASM recommends that most adults should sleep for seven or more hours per night to promote optimal health.

To improve sleep quality, Shaikh suggests men limit their screen time before going to bed, as the blue light emitted by phones, tablets, computers and TV mimics daylight and affects one’s internal body clock, which prevents one from feeling tired.

In addition, he said, men should also avoid drinking alcohol too close to bedtime, as the drug’s sedative effects are incomplete and may lead to fragmented sleep or other sleep issues.
