If there’s ever a phrase to make a gamer’s skin crawl (more than “Insert your favorite character here” is in Fortnite!) it’s likely “movie video game tie-in” as for those with memories that stretch back before the invention of microtransactions, these types of games were the utter bane of our lives.
Stinky, low-effort slop like this was funnelled directly into the mouths of gamers with little to no respect for the IP in question, as back then games were far cheaper to make and almost always made back their costs, and to hell with the review scores right?
Yet it turns out that a sea of manure is just the right place for a few elegant roses to bloom, and as such there have been a few standout video games that not only do their film proud, but in some ways are even better than the movie in question!
We’ve covered this before and now we’re back with eight more! So let’s take a look at them…
Now I know what you’re thinking, “Jules you stupid pebble-headed idiot, Ratchet and Clank most definitely started life out as a video game and not a movie, so why don’t you stop smoking asbestos and get down off the roof”
Well, here’s the thing, I know you can’t see it but I’m making a little evil finger temple right now because YOU’VE FALLEN INTO MY TRAP.
For you see, dear friend, the Ratchet and Clank game that dropped on PS4 wasn’t actually a remake of the beloved first game in the series, it was a video game based on a movie of the same name, which itself was based on the first game.
And what an experience it was, offering up beautiful graphics, an astounding dollop of nostalgia, and some cutscenes ripped from the movie tying things together.
It’s just a shame that the movie itself felt rather flat, and despite all of its flash never really felt like it was firing on all cylinders. Thankfully the movie splices were kept to a minimum so that the gameplay could speak for itself, and reminded the world why this pair of platforming pals are as well regarded as they are.
