Players are logging in to Red Dead Online en masse today to mourn the “death” of the online western.
#RedDeadFuneral trended briefly over the weekend as players prepared to log in today, July 13 and celebrate the game and protest its winding down. This is in response to Rockstar stating that it plans to phase out major content updates for the game.
“Today is the day the community is paying its respects to a game that many of us love, and wish had gotten more love from Rockstar,” read one of the hundreds of tweets from community members. “So login in today, and have a few beers at either Valentine or Blackwater Graveyard. #RedDeadFuneral #RedDeadOnline”.

While Red Dead Online is a popular off-shoot of the incredibly well-received Red Dead Redemption 2, it never garnered the same player base as GTA Online, and thus wasn’t supported anywhere near as fervently.
The game will remain online for the foreseeable future, but Rockstar’s internal focus on the game has lessened as it moves into full production of GTA 6.
“Alongside seasonal special events and experience improvements — plus other changes to enhance and maintain a healthy Red Dead Online environment — we plan to build upon existing modes and add new Telegram Missions this year, rather than delivering major themed content updates like in previous years, and we will continue to highlight and share the creative efforts of our Red Dead community at every opportunity via the Newswire and beyond,” Rockstar said in a blog post recently.

Red Dead Redemption 2 was reportedly due to be released on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, but those versions are reportedly in limbo.
That’s according to Tez2, a Rockstar insider who’s accurately leaked information about the company’s games in the past.
Last week they claimed remasters of GTA IV and Red Dead Redemption “were on the table a few years ago” but are no longer planned.
Asked whether it’s safe to say Red Dead Redemption 2 will never receive a PS5 and Xbox Series X/S release now, Tez2 replied: “Yes. I’ve heard about those a long time ago.
“As well as their plan to come up with an Enhanced Rockstar Editor. All cancelled/halted now.”
